Waste and Recycling Campaign

North Somerset FOE is pledged to campaign to make sure North Somerset really does improve its recycling and waste management. In particular we will be pressing North Somerset to:

1. Set up a system for recycling plastic bottles
2. Increase the range of items that are collected from kerbsides for recycling.

We will also question very rigorously the proposal to INCINERATE rubbish. North Somerset is considering this as a way of getting energy from rubbish but large scale incineration is bad for your health and will hasten climate change.

We also plan to:

1. work with local supermarkets to reduce their use of non recyclable materials
2. work with the public on easy ways to increase recycling and reduce waste and energy use.
FOE's targets for the percentage of waste that's recycled are 50% by 2010 and 75% by 2015. Our aim is to make sure that we in North Somerset meet or are ahead of these targets.
