Driving green: how to make a change when using your car:
- Allow ample time for your journey and drive at an optimum speed to save fuel. The least fuel efficient speeds are below 15 mph, and over 60 mph. Driving over 70 mph will rapidly increase your emissions. It can cost you up to 25% more in fuel to drive at 70mph compared to 50mph.
- Reduce drag and make your fuel consumption more efficient by driving with the windows up, and taking your roof rack off when not in use.
- Read the road ahead. Why hurry to get to a red light or join the end of a queue. Harsh acceleration and braking can use up to 30% more fuel and can cause increased wear and tear on the vehicle.
- Remove unnecessary items from your vehicle to reduce weight, and fuel consumption. These can include buggies, golf clubs, tools, footwear and so on.
- Ensure that you have the correct tyre pressure. Every 6psi the tyre is under-inflated the fuel consumption increases by 1%.
- Consider a car share. There are schemes running to put you in touch with fellow commuters. But you could ask work collegues and friends if they need a lift. Maybe if you drive to a regular gym class or how about sharing the school-run? For example, with a roster of parents taking it in turns you'll reduce congestion and fuel. If you are a two or more car family, perhaps there is a way to reduce this.
- Maintain your car. Ensure it is serviced at the right intervals. Check that your engine is properly tuned as this improves performance and limits fuel consumption
